Running

(after e.e. cummings’s “In just-”)

in not-
yet spring when the hills gush
green and giving the old
lame dog
scents            far            and faint

and eastwind and youngdog come
running tag or
catch me and it’s March

when some die are some born

the almost deaf
old dog scents
faint            and distant
and westwind and youngdog come leaping
their own shadows and

it’s the end
of
winter when the old
dog            scents

far
and
gone
