Here we are again debating whether
to validate or not this usual case of
spontaneous combustion involving a
thirty-eight year old Mexican-American
male who did woodworking, sometimes
sculptures of fertility idols. Of course,
his brown shoes were planted firmly
on the rug. The tools, brushes, mishmash
of a life lived well collected in a dirty bowl
kept us from denying that he once existed,
that he had a name, that he had laughed
at some point in his life, and that pile
of soot and ashes under the flea-market
coffee table might have been a coincidence.
