rescue drowning sailors,
star in water shows,
sleep while swimming.
They twist, nuzzle, tooth-scratch,
court. A few have wanted
to mate with women swimmers.
Do dolphins dream of them?
They stayed in the sea, kept flippers.
Our misconceiving amphibian
forebears struggled toward land
for us to stand on our own two feet,
have to lie down for night repairs,
for deepsea dreams.
