the color of death
in China’s Huai basin.
Tumors grow.

Factories churn and dump
waste. City dwellers complain
of putrid air; some change
has occurred:

It is the new way.

But streams bring sickness
to the small villages.
There, people don’t speak
of pollution:

It is still a new word.
